About
Welcome to Branwen's.
Pull up a chair. The kettle is on.
Here you'll find small-batch coffee, roasted in Temecula, California, and a shelf of books chosen to go with the cup. Nothing here is hurried. Good coffee needs a little time, and so does a good story.
Stay as long as you like.
Who Branwen Is
Branwen takes her name from old Welsh legend. She's a keeper of the hearth: someone who knows good coffee and good books and doesn't make a show of it.
She's the wiser friend, not the salesperson. She'll tell you what's in the cup, suggest a book to go with it, and leave you to enjoy both.
Behind the Curtain
Branwen is the voice of this place. I'm the person behind her: Lisa, a website builder in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.
I've dreamed of owning a bookstore with a cafe for most of my adult life. I spent years in cafes that had room for a table of dice and snacks, playing tabletop RPGs. I also loved the nights when authors read from their work, and the open mic and spoken word evenings. There's something about the smell of used books and fresh coffee that feels like home.
I don't have a shop yet. Maybe someday it will be a little mobile cafe that pops up at events. For now, I'm building it one piece at a time, online. I choose the books and the coffees, and I build the sites, some by hand and some with an AI assistant helping.
Why This Coffee
Every bag here is roasted by Temecula Coffee Roasters in Temecula, California. I choose what goes on the shelf. Not every coffee makes the cut.
I look for coffees that taste like where they come from. Take the Ethiopia Natural: grown by smallholder farmers in the Sidama Zone, 1700 to 1900 meters up, dried whole on raised beds, and roasted medium-light. In the cup, you'll find milk chocolate, caramel, and fruit.
Dark isn't the only way to roast. Light and medium roasts let a coffee's origin speak, and there's a wide world between "dark" and "weak."
A note on freshness: coffee needs a few days to rest after roasting. Give a new bag some time before you open it. Your first cup will taste clearer.
From Lisa: I came to coffee late. A Starbucks caffè mocha got me in the door. Then my palate kept growing, and I noticed most restaurant coffee no longer measured up. I learned something else the hard way: my first cups from a fresh bag tasted harsh until I learned to let the coffee rest. I'm still learning, and I'd like to learn alongside you.
The Ritual
A day has its own hours, and each one asks for something different.
Morning. Brew a full pot and greet the day. Nothing is rushed here. Let the kitchen fill with the smell of it before the first cup.
Afternoon. When the day drags, a second cup can carry you through to evening. Choose something lighter if the night is still ahead.
Evening. For a quiet night, set the coffee aside and whisk a cup of matcha. It's a slower way to wind down the day.
Game night. Planning a late session with friends and dice? Brew a fresh, hot pot, and keep it close to the table.
From Lisa: I've gotten through enough late nights at work on office coffee to know the difference. Life's too short for bad coffee.
The Bindery Door
Coffee is half of the story. The other half is on the shelf.
Branwen's Bindery is the home of everything here: the brews, and the books to go with them. Step through to Branwen's Books for a shelf of favorites: folklore and myth, queer fantasy, and a few house favorites, all through Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores.
Pour a cup. Pick a book. Stay a while.
